On February 26, 2000, members of East York Hapkido-Karate Club's adult and children's programs participated in the Ontario Provincial Open Karate Championships in Hamilton, Ontario. This was our first tournament experience as a club in many years, since our training does not focus on competition. It was also a great opportunity to meet many outstanding martial artists from around the province and elsewhere. You can click the smaller images to view larger ones. Sensei John Foster competed in the black belt self-defense division. Gordon Nore and Brad Reed (background) were Mr Foster's ukeis (attackers). In this pic, John has just foot-swept Brad. (Mr Reed also competed in the intermediate kyu (green-to-blue belt) sparring division for 18-year-old males.)

Representatives from our coloured belt kids' classes had their work cut out for them. The intermediate kyu (orange-to-green belt) for boys and girls aged nine and ten had 42 participants! Officials split the group into two parallel divisions. EYHKC was well-represented by Julian and Tucker. Tucker is shown here at left.

The team. Front row: Taylor, Tucker, Gordon, John, Brad, Julian, and Joseph. Back row: Lucy, Artemis, and Jeanne. Taylor and Joseph did not compete, but put in extra hours to help Tucker and Julian train for the event. Lucy, Artemis, and Jeannie drove to Hamiltion to support us. Our warmest thanks for their help and support. Kamsa hamnida.
