the uniform

A Karate belt is called an obi in Japanese. It serves to hold the gi closed. The obi and the gi hold symbolic meaning. The obi's colour signifies the degree of one's mental, emotional, and physical development in the martial arts. The gi denotes a student of the martial arts.

the belts

White is the colour of innocence -- a blank slate upon which the sensei is about to write.

Yellow is the colour of the sun -- the dawning of a new day or beginning.

Orange is the colour of the awakening -- the discovery of basic skills and mental discipline.

Green is the colour of growth -- in which the beginner's skills are about to blossom.

Blue is the colour of the sky -- in which a student's horizons are expanding.

Brown is the colour of the earth -- in which the student has achieved a rooted foundation.

Red is the colour of danger -- both friend and foe should beware.

Black is the opposite of white and a fusion of all levels of mental, physical and emotional development.
