May 1997. Here are some photos of a demonstration we gave during an open-house at East York Community Centre. This set provides a nice illustration of the "Japanese Arm Bar" technique, an effective finishing hold. Please remember: The following is presented for informational and entertainment purposes only. These techniques should only be practised under the supervision of a qualified instructor. You can click the smaller images to view larger ones. eycc1.jpg This set of photos illustrates a finishing hold known as the "Japanese arm bar." In the first pic, John Foster (standing) has locked his brother Tony's wrist.

John then sits down, with Tony's neck tucked in snuggly under his left leg. (For this technique to work, the neck must be isolated with the leg closest to it in order to immobilize the opponent's upper body.) As Tony resists the arm bar, John envelops his arm and hugs it close to his body, and then leans backward. This way John can use his upper-body weight to straighten Tony's arm, rather than struggling with him. eycc2.jpg

eycc3.jpg With Tony's arm now straightened, John pops his hips upward, causing pain to his brother's elbow. Here you can see John release the arm-bar as Tony taps with his left hand, to indicate that he is in pain.
